The Biondi Santi family is without doubt one of the most famous wine families in all of Italy. Above all for their legendary standing in the village of Montalcino, and for their own sangiovese clone, BBS11. It was here they made their first Brunello, in the 1888 vintage, and it is why many regard them as the founding father of Brunello di Montalcino.
It was quite a shock when they sold the estate Il Greppo in Montalcino in 2019. Since then, Tancredi Biondi Santi and his father Jacopo have shifted their attention southward, to the Tuscan coast in Maremma. Here at the family's castle Castello di Montepò south of Montalcino, they have been making the "super Tuscan" Sassoalloro since the 1991 vintage. A wonderful buy that shows sangiovese at its most delicate, and tastes like a mini-Biondi, especially in magnum.
